What we see most in Glen Ridge

Glen Ridge separated from Bloomfield in 1895 and then spent most of the following century declining to change much. Nearly the whole borough went up between 1870 and 1940. Under three per cent of the historic district's buildings predate that window and only about five per cent come after it, so the housing reads as one continuous run of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival, with Shingle, Craftsman and the Tudor Revival that arrived after the First World War filling in around them. The district was listed on the National Register in 1982 and has been extended twice since. Two commuter rail lines run along the wooded ravine that splits the borough, which is why the streets sit where they do. Those streets are still lit by gas lamps, several hundred of them.

Preserved streetscapes come with preserved hardware. A large share of Glen Ridge front doors still carry the lock body they were built with, and in most cases that body is a mortise unit sitting in a pocket cut into the edge of the door rather than a modern lock bored through its face. The reflex quote is replacement, because swapping a mortise for a bored deadbolt is faster and pays better. On a house like this it is usually the wrong call. The original is often better metal than the thing that would replace it, and the escutcheon, knob and keyhole are part of what a buyer is paying for. These can be stripped, cleaned, re-pinned and rekeyed, and we would rather spend the afternoon doing it.

There is regulation attached to a borough that looks like this one, and it can reach the street-facing elevation of a house. We do not pretend to know what applies to your particular address, and any locksmith who tells you confidently is guessing. What we do is ask before we cut. If the existing hardware can be serviced, nothing new goes into the door at all. If new hardware genuinely is required, we work to the bore or mortise pocket already there rather than opening the door up for a modern footprint, and where that cannot be done we say so before the drill comes out rather than afterwards. Verify your own position with the borough first. It is one phone call and it is cheaper than the alternative.

Houses of this size and age also run more openings than a phone quote assumes: a front door, a service or kitchen door, a porch door, a basement hatch, a detached garage.
