What we see most in Glen Ridge
Glen Ridge separated from Bloomfield in 1895 and then spent most of the following century declining to change much. Nearly the whole borough went up between 1870 and 1940. Under three per cent of the historic district's buildings predate that window and only about five per cent come after it, so the housing reads as one continuous run of Queen Anne and Colonial Revival, with Shingle, Craftsman and the Tudor Revival that arrived after the First World War filling in around them. The district was listed on the National Register in 1982 and has been extended twice since. Two commuter rail lines run along the wooded ravine that splits the borough, which is why the streets sit where they do. Those streets are still lit by gas lamps, several hundred of them.
Preserved streetscapes come with preserved hardware. A large share of Glen Ridge front doors still carry the lock body they were built with, and in most cases that body is a mortise unit sitting in a pocket cut into the edge of the door rather than a modern lock bored through its face. The reflex quote is replacement, because swapping a mortise for a bored deadbolt is faster and pays better. On a house like this it is usually the wrong call. The original is often better metal than the thing that would replace it, and the escutcheon, knob and keyhole are part of what a buyer is paying for. These can be stripped, cleaned, re-pinned and rekeyed, and we would rather spend the afternoon doing it.
There is regulation attached to a borough that looks like this one, and it can reach the street-facing elevation of a house. We do not pretend to know what applies to your particular address, and any locksmith who tells you confidently is guessing. What we do is ask before we cut. If the existing hardware can be serviced, nothing new goes into the door at all. If new hardware genuinely is required, we work to the bore or mortise pocket already there rather than opening the door up for a modern footprint, and where that cannot be done we say so before the drill comes out rather than afterwards. Verify your own position with the borough first. It is one phone call and it is cheaper than the alternative.
Houses of this size and age also run more openings than a phone quote assumes: a front door, a service or kitchen door, a porch door, a basement hatch, a detached garage. Deadbolts keyed on both sides are common wherever there is glass in or beside the door, and each of those is two cylinders inside one lock. We count them before quoting rather than after arriving. Renovation here has put multipoint hardware on a good many rear elevations as well, the Andersen and Marvin patio and French door systems where one handle throws several bolts, alongside EMTEK, Baldwin and Mul-T-Lock at the front. Most locksmiths will quote a replacement door rather than open a multipoint gearbox. We repair, rekey and replace them.

Glen Ridge questions
Can an original lock still be rekeyed if nobody makes parts for it any more?
Usually yes. Rekeying works on the cylinder, and the cylinder is the part that is most often serviceable even when the surrounding hardware is long obsolete. We take it out, re-pin it to a new key, clean and lubricate the mortise body around it and reset the strike so the bolt throws properly. Obsolete does not mean dead. It means there is no shelf to pull a replacement off, which is exactly the situation where servicing the original beats the alternative and where most locksmiths give up early.
Can we have keyless entry without altering the front door?
Often, and on a Glen Ridge house that is normally the better answer anyway. The usual approach is to put the keyless access at a side, rear or garage entry that nobody photographs, key it to the same system as everything else, and leave the front door exactly as it stands. Where a front-door keypad genuinely is wanted, there are units that fit an existing bore without enlarging it. We will walk the doors with you and say which ones can take it without visible damage.
Our patio door locks at several points and the handle has gone slack. Is that repairable?
Usually. A slack handle on a multipoint door normally means the gearbox behind it has failed or the drive rail has dropped out of alignment, not that the door is finished. Most locksmiths will quote you a whole new door because they do not open these. We do, and the repair is generally a gearbox, a handle set or the full locking strip depending on what has gone. Photographs of the door edge with the door open will tell us most of what we need in advance.
How much does it cost to rekey a house in Glen Ridge?
Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.
Is there a minimum charge?
$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Glen Ridge. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.
Do you charge extra after hours in Glen Ridge?
After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.
Can I book online rather than calling?
Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.
Are you licensed to work in Glen Ridge?
Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.
How soon can you get to Glen Ridge?
