We work in Bloomfield constantly
Bloomfield was incorporated in 1812 and was once close to four times the size it is now. Belleville, Montclair, Glen Ridge and Nutley were all carved out of it, which is why Bloomfield reads less like a suburb than like the older, denser thing the suburbs were cut from. Roughly fifty-five thousand people live in about five and a half square miles. Two stations on the Montclair-Boonton line and a light rail stop keep the commuter traffic moving, and only about half the housing is owner-occupied, which is a far lower share than the towns immediately north of it. For a locksmith the consequence is volume and turnover: more units, more separate entries, and more keys changing hands more often.
There are two different hardware eras sitting on the same streets here. The pre- war stock, frame two-families and older single houses, carries mortise bodies, rim locks, narrow-backset entry sets and doors that have been rehung more than once. The post-war stock and the infill built since carries bored cylindrical locks on standard backsets, cheaper to work on and far more likely to have already been replaced with whatever was on the shelf that year. Neither is a problem. They simply need different parts on the van, and a locksmith who only stocks for one era will either fail to fix your door or will fix it by replacing something that did not need replacing.
Most of the Bloomfield work we do is stacked rather than single. An owner or a managing agent with several units does not want a separate call-out for each door, so we schedule them together: three turnovers in one building, or one unit in each of four buildings across a morning. The mobile service charge lands once for the visit rather than once per unit, and the sequencing matters more than people expect, because the difference between a good morning and a wasted one is usually whether somebody with keys is meeting us at each address. Itemised invoices with unit references, before and after photographs, purchase orders accepted, and a do-not-exceed figure so a routine repair finishes on the first visit rather than generating a second one.
That said, one lock is still worth the call-out. This is territory we cover constantly rather than drive out to, so a single jammed deadbolt on a single unit door is an ordinary booking here and gets a short arrival window rather than a vague afternoon. A tenant locked out before work, a key snapped off in a cylinder, a door that will not latch because the frame has moved with the weather: same day. We will also talk you out of the expensive version where it is not warranted. Most tired hardware in this stock wants cleaning, adjusting and rekeying rather than a building-wide hardware replacement, and we would rather bill you for the smaller job twice than the larger one once.

We work Bloomfield constantly. Arrival windows here are short and small jobs are worth doing, so it is not a wasted call-out for one lock. Call rather than book online if it is urgent — the phone is faster.

Bloomfield questions
Can you do several units in one visit rather than booking each separately?
That is the normal way we work here, and it is cheaper for you. Several turnovers in one building, or single units across several buildings in a morning, both work. The mobile service charge applies once for the visit however many doors we get through, and the paperwork comes back itemised by unit with photographs, so you can see what was done where. Tell us the unit list and the access arrangements when you book and we will sequence it so nobody is waiting on a superintendent.
Half our doors are old and half are modern. Does that complicate things?
Only for whoever is stocking the van, which is our problem rather than yours. Pre-war doors here run mortise bodies and odd backsets; the newer ones run standard bored cylinders. We carry for both, and where a building is mixed we will usually key the whole thing alike anyway so the owner is not carrying a ring. If a keyway on one old door will not accept the same key as the rest, we replace that one lock and key the new one to everything else.
A tenant has called us about a door. Who authorises the work?
Whoever is paying, and on a rental door that is normally the owner or the managing agent rather than the tenant standing outside it. A straightforward lockout we will handle on proof of residency and invoice to the account. Anything past that, a cylinder change or a rekey, needs the owner's word, because altering what a tenant's key opens is not the tenant's decision to make. Setting an account up in advance means that conversation happens once instead of at every door, and it stops repairs stalling overnight.
How much does it cost to rekey a house in Bloomfield?
Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.
Is there a minimum charge?
$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Bloomfield. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.
Do you charge extra after hours in Bloomfield?
After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.
Can I book online rather than calling?
Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.
Are you licensed to work in Bloomfield?
Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.
How soon can you get to Bloomfield?
Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Bloomfield is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
