Bloomfield was incorporated in 1812 and was once close to four times the size it is now. Belleville, Montclair, Glen Ridge and Nutley were all carved out of it, which is why Bloomfield reads less like a suburb than like the older, denser thing the suburbs were cut from. Roughly fifty-five thousand people live in about five and a half square miles. Two stations on the Montclair-Boonton line and a light rail stop keep the commuter traffic moving, and only about half the housing is owner-occupied, which is a far lower share than the towns immediately north of it. There are two different hardware eras sitting on the same streets here. The pre- war stock, frame two-families and older single houses, carries mortise bodies, rim locks, narrow-backset entry sets and doors that have been rehung more than once. The post-war stock and the infill built since carries bored cylindrical locks on standard backsets, cheaper to work on and far more likely to have already been replaced with whatever was on the shelf that year. Neither is a problem. They simply need different parts on the van, and a locksmith who only stocks for one era will either fail to fix your door or will fix it by replacing something that did not need replacing.

Most of the Bloomfield work we do is stacked rather than single. An owner or a managing agent with several units does not want a separate call-out for each door, so we schedule them together: three turnovers in one building, or one unit in each of four buildings across a morning. The mobile service charge lands once for the visit rather than once per unit, and the sequencing matters more than people expect, because the difference between a good morning and a wasted one is usually whether somebody with keys is meeting us at each address. Itemised invoices with unit references, before and after photographs, purchase orders accepted, and a do-not-exceed figure so a routine repair finishes on the first visit rather than generating a second one.

That said, one lock is still worth the call-out. This is territory we cover constantly rather than drive out to, so a single jammed deadbolt on a single unit door is an ordinary booking here and gets a short arrival window rather than a vague afternoon. A tenant locked out before work, a key snapped off in a cylinder, a door that will not latch because the frame has moved with the weather: same day. We will also talk you out of the expensive version where it is not warranted. Most tired hardware in this stock wants cleaning, adjusting and rekeying rather than a building-wide hardware replacement, and we would rather bill you for the smaller job twice than the larger one once.
