The MK-3 “Lockbell” — one hole in the door instead of three devices

A deadbolt, a 2.5K camera and a doorbell in a single unit. Most people end up buying those as three separate things, drilling three holes, and running three apps.

You can see and talk to whoever is out there

Two-way audio and video from your phone, wherever you are. A delivery driver, a contractor, someone you were not expecting at ten at night — you see them, you speak to them, and if you want to let them in you do it from the same screen. A wireless indoor chime comes with it, so the doorbell actually rings inside the house — not just a notification on a phone that might be on silent.

It opens without being touched

Face recognition and palm-vein reading, at about a hand’s distance from the lock. This is the part worth caring about: it is the answer to the single most common complaint about fingerprint locks. Wet hands, dirty hands, cold hands, dry or older skin, long nails, gloves — every one of those defeats a fingerprint reader, and none of them defeat this. Arms full of shopping is the normal case, not the edge case.

Backing all of that up: a keypad code, the app, and a real key in a real cylinder. As with everything we fit, the mechanical override is keyed alike to the rest of your house, so the lock being clever never means the door cannot simply be unlocked.

Worth knowing before you buy: the MK-3 runs on the Tuya app, while the MK-1 uses TT Lock and the MK-2 lives in Apple Home. If you put an MK-1 on the back door and an MK-3 on the front, that is two apps on your phone, not one. Not a problem for most people, but nobody tells you beforehand and it is the kind of thing that annoys you on day three. If having everything in one place matters more to you than having the camera, say so and we will fit a matching pair instead.

Why the guarantee is the product

Here is the honest version. A brand name on a lock buys you a warranty that is a phone number in another state and a box you have to ship. It does not buy you someone who knows your door.

We are not a lock manufacturer and we will not claim to be. We are the people who decided this is the lock worth fitting, who have installed more than a hundred of them across North Jersey, and who will drive back, take it off and put a new one on — the lock and the visit, free — if it fails inside two years.

Why we guarantee it ourselves

Because we have been on the other side of a manufacturer's warranty, and we know what it costs you. A lock fails. You call the number on the box. You get a call centre that wants you to pull the batteries, reset the unit, re-pair the app and try again — the same script whether you are a homeowner who has never opened a lock or a licensed locksmith who has fitted several hundred of them. Eventually, if you stay on the phone long enough and describe the fault enough times, they send a replacement. In a box. To your door. Which you then have to fit.

Meanwhile your front door does not lock.

That is the whole argument for doing it this way. We chose the lock, so the choice is ours to answer for. If it fails inside two years you call us, not a queue, and the person who put it on your door takes it off again and puts a new one on. No case number, no shipping, no script.

Two-year Major Key guarantee on the MK-line lock itself. If it fails within two years we come out, replace the unit and fit the new one — the visit and the fitting included. No charge, no shipping, no case number.

Our labour carries 90 days on every job — rekeys, lockouts, door adjustments, installations, residential and commercial alike. One number, no small print about which kind of door it was. The two years above is the MK lock specifically, because it is the one lock we chose and the one we are willing to guarantee the hardware on.

The Major Key guarantee

  • 90 days on our labour, on every job. Rekeys, lockouts, door adjustments, installations — residential or commercial, the same number either way. If something we did comes loose, sticks, or stops working the way we left it, we come back and put it right at no charge.
  • MK-line smart locks — 2 years on the lock itself. If an MK-1, MK-2 or MK-3 we supplied gives you trouble inside two years, we come out, replace the unit and fit the new one free — the visit and the fitting included. Not a manufacturer's call centre, not a returns form. Us. This is the one place we guarantee the hardware, because it is the one lock we chose.
  • Other locks we supply — Mul-T-Lock, Kwikset, Schlage, Master Lock — carry their manufacturer's warranty on the hardware, and we file that claim for you rather than handing you a phone number. Our labour on them is the 90-day baseline above.
  • What none of it covers: damage, forced entry, or a lock that was sound when we left and has been attacked since.

Why we change the knob below your keypad

The most common lockout we get called to is not a broken lock. It is a keypad on the deadbolt and an ordinary keyed knob underneath it.

Here is how it goes. You fit a keypad, and within a month nobody in the house carries a key any more — that is the entire point of it. Then one day somebody locks the bottom lock on the way out. A cleaner, a guest, a family member; always innocently, usually out of habit. Your code still works perfectly. It opens the deadbolt. And you are still standing outside, locked out of your own house by a lock you had forgotten was there.

So we fit a passage knob below the keypad as part of the job. A passage knob — hall-and-closet function — has no lock in it at all. It turns, the door opens, and the failure mode simply cannot happen. Where the existing hardware can be converted, we convert it rather than replacing it.

Included with a smart lock installation where it is needed. If your door already has suitable hardware below the deadbolt, we leave it alone and tell you why — we are not going to change something that is already right.

Which one should you get?

If your household runs on iPhones and you already use Apple Home for lights or a thermostat, take the MK-2 — the lock will simply appear alongside everything else you already control.

If you have a mix of phones, or you would rather the lock kept to itself in its own app, take the MK-1. It is what we fit most often and it is what we know best.

Both are the same price and the same guarantee, so this is a preference, not a budget decision.

Already bought a lock?

We will fit it. One trip covers as many doors as we do while we are there — the visit is charged once, then each lock is priced on its own. $250 mobile service charge for the visit, then $25 per mechanical lock or $150 per electronic lock. Door and frame prep $100 per lock where new holes have to be cut — mechanical only, electronic already includes it.

It is the visit, then each lock — not a price per job. One trip covers however many doors we do while we are there, so the second and third lock cost a fraction of the first.

Mobile service charge once per visit, however many locks $250
Each mechanical knob or deadbolt you supply +$25
Each electronic or smart lock you supply more labour — it has to be programmed, paired and set up with you before we leave. Door prep is already included in this figure. +$150
Door and frame prep, per lock only where there is no hole yet and one has to be cut. Never added to an electronic lock. +$100

What it comes to

ExampleTotal
One knob or deadbolt, going where a lock already is$275
Three of them, all replacing existing locks$325
Three on doors with no lock in them yet$625
One electronic or smart lock$400
Two electronic locks$550

We will also tell you honestly whether the lock you bought is any good before we put it on your house. If it is not, we will say so and you can decide.

Two things decide your price, and you can answer both from where you are standing: how many locks, and is there already a hole in the door and frame — that is, are you replacing a lock that is already there, or putting one somewhere there was none? Answer those at booking and the quote is right before we drive out.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Smart lock questions

How much is a smart lock installed?

$750 for a standalone visit — that is the lock, the installation, the app setup and the mobile service charge. Added to a new homeowner package on the same visit it is $500, because the trip is already paid for. If you have already bought a lock yourself, we will fit it. $250 mobile service charge for the visit, then $25 per mechanical lock or $150 per electronic lock. Door and frame prep $100 per lock where new holes have to be cut — mechanical only, electronic already includes it. One knob on a door that already has a lock is $275; three of them is $325, because the trip is only charged once.

Do you make these locks yourselves?

No, and we will not pretend otherwise. We source them, we test them, we have installed well over a hundred of them across North Jersey, and in a home we put our own two-year guarantee behind them. What you are buying is our judgment about which lock is worth fitting, and a locksmith who drives back if it fails.

What happens if it breaks in year two?

We replace it — the lock and the visit, no charge, for two full years. The difference is who picks up. A manufacturer's warranty means a call centre, a troubleshooting script, and eventually a replacement posted to you in a box that you still have to fit, while your door does not lock. Ours means the locksmith who installed it drives back and changes it.

Can I still use a key?

Yes. Every lock in the MK line has a real mechanical key override, and the key is keyed alike to the rest of your house. Batteries die, phones get lost, guests are not technical. A keyless lock with no key is a design decision we do not agree with.

What is door sense?

The lock knows whether the door is actually shut, not just whether the bolt was thrown. It will tell you if you left the door open, and it will lock the bolt on a timer you set once the door is properly closed.

What is the difference between the MK-1 and the MK-2?

The app. The MK-1 runs on the TT Lock app, which works on iPhone and Android and is the one we fit most often. The MK-2 works with Apple Home, so it joins the rest of an Apple household and answers to Siri. Same price, same hardware quality, same guarantee. Pick the one that matches the phones in your house.

How many fingerprints and codes can it hold?

More than a family needs. We set up the codes you want on the day — a code for you, one for the cleaner, one for the dog walker, one that only works on Tuesdays if that is useful — and we show you how to add and revoke them yourself.

Will it fit my door?

Almost certainly. Standard bore and backset, which covers the overwhelming majority of American exterior doors. If your door is a European-style multipoint unit, that is different hardware and a different job — send us a photo and we will tell you for free.
