This is the keypad only. We are not selling you a new garage door opener or a new motor. Your existing opener stays. This adds a weather-resistant code pad outside the garage door, with a camera and alerts on your phone.

Check your opener first — it takes thirty seconds

Stand under the motor unit on your garage ceiling and look for a small coloured square button marked LEARN. It is usually on the back or side of the housing, sometimes behind the light cover.

The honest bit about phone control

A lot of listings for these are vague about this, so here it is plainly.

On its own, the keypad gives you code entry at the garage door, a camera, and alerts on your phone when the door opens or closes. That is genuinely useful and it is what most people want.

Opening and closing the door remotely from the app is a separate thing. It needs your opener itself to be internet-connected — either because it already is, or because a small controller is added to make it so. If your opener is from the green, red or purple learn button generations, it is almost certainly not connected on its own.

We will tell you which of those two situations you are in before you book, not after we are standing in your garage.

We also service the lock on the garage door itself

The keypad opens the door. The T-handle and cylinder on the door are a separate lock, and they seize, wear out and get keys lost just like any other. We rekey and replace those too — ask when you book the keypad and we will do both in the one visit rather than charging you a second trip.

Garage keypad questions

How much is a garage door keypad installed?

$750, and that is everything — the keypad, mounting it, pairing it to your opener, setting up the app and account with you, and the mobile service charge. There is no separate trip fee on top.

Does this replace my garage door opener?

No. It is only the keypad. Your existing motor and door stay exactly as they are — this adds a code pad at the door and, depending on your opener, connects it to your phone.

Can I open the garage from my phone with just the keypad?

No — and anyone telling you otherwise is selling you something. The keypad gives you the camera, recorded clips, alerts when the door moves, and full control of the codes from the app. Pressing a button in the app to open the door is a different feature: it needs the opener itself to be myQ-connected, either because it already is or because a small controller is added at the motor. What you can do from anywhere is give someone access — add a PIN in the app, text it to them, and delete it afterwards. For a delivery, a dog walker or a relative at the door, that is usually the thing you actually needed.

How do I know if my opener is compatible?

Compatibility is decided by the opener, and it is a yes or no rather than a maybe — myQ publish the list. Look at the motor unit on your ceiling, usually behind the light cover, for a small coloured square button marked LEARN. Yellow, green, red or orange, purple and white are the compatible generations, roughly covering openers made from 1993 onwards. Send us a photo of that button and we will confirm before you book — thirty seconds on your phone and nobody wastes a trip.

Which brands of opener work?

LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman, Raynor and AccessMaster made from 1993 onwards work directly. Other brands are not out — they need a small myQ Smart Garage Control fitted at the motor as a bridge, and then the keypad behaves identically. Tell us the make and we will say which of the two you are before you book.

What if my opener turns out not to be compatible?

Then we do not fit it, and you have not paid for anything. That is exactly why we ask for a photo of the learn button before the appointment rather than finding out in your garage.

Why would I want this?

The garage is how most families actually enter their house, and the garage door is the entry point people secure last. A code at the door means the kids, the dog walker and the person delivering something do not need a key to the house or a remote left in an unlocked car.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.
