Montclair broke away from Bloomfield in 1868 largely to get a railroad built, and the line it got is still the shape of the town: a string of stations with a pocket of walkable housing around each one. The result is that nearly every era of American domestic building sits inside one municipality. Victorians and shingle-style houses, large centre-hall colonials, arts-and-crafts and foursquares, purpose-built apartment blocks, and older houses long since cut into two and three units. Six historic districts here are listed on the National Register alongside dozens of individually listed landmarks. For a locksmith that means the door hardware in this township spans about a century and a half, and no single approach covers it.

Original mortise lock bodies are common in Montclair, and they are where most of the bad advice happens. A mortise lock sits in a pocket cut into the edge of the door rather than through a bored hole, and the standard quote is a full hardware replacement, because swapping is quicker than servicing and it is a bigger invoice. That is usually the wrong answer. The mortise body is frequently better made than what would replace it, the escutcheon and knob are part of what the house is worth, and the whole assembly can be stripped, cleaned, adjusted and rekeyed. Montclair also regulates some of what happens to the outside of a building. The township has designated local historic districts of its own on top of the National Register listings, and certain exterior alterations inside those districts require a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission before the work happens. So we quote in cylinders and count them before we come. Some of the higher-value properties also carry EMTEK, Baldwin or Mul-T-Lock hardware, or the multipoint systems built into Andersen and Marvin patio and French doors, where one handle throws several bolts along the edge.
