What we see most in Montclair

Montclair broke away from Bloomfield in 1868 largely to get a railroad built, and the line it got is still the shape of the town: a string of stations with a pocket of walkable housing around each one. The result is that nearly every era of American domestic building sits inside one municipality. Victorians and shingle-style houses, large centre-hall colonials, arts-and-crafts and foursquares, purpose-built apartment blocks, and older houses long since cut into two and three units. Six historic districts here are listed on the National Register alongside dozens of individually listed landmarks. For a locksmith that means the door hardware in this township spans about a century and a half, and no single approach covers it.

Original mortise lock bodies are common in Montclair, and they are where most of the bad advice happens. A mortise lock sits in a pocket cut into the edge of the door rather than through a bored hole, and the standard quote is a full hardware replacement, because swapping is quicker than servicing and it is a bigger invoice. That is usually the wrong answer. The mortise body is frequently better made than what would replace it, the escutcheon and knob are part of what the house is worth, and the whole assembly can be stripped, cleaned, adjusted and rekeyed. We do that work. Where a body genuinely is beyond saving we will say so and show you why before anything gets cut.

Montclair also regulates some of what happens to the outside of a building. The township has designated local historic districts of its own on top of the National Register listings, and certain exterior alterations inside those districts require a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission before the work happens. We are locksmiths rather than your planning consultant, so we will not tell you what your particular address is subject to. What we will do is raise it before we start. A locksmith who cuts a fresh bore or fits a modern escutcheon on a street-facing door without asking can leave an owner with a problem that costs far more to unwind than the lock ever did.

The larger houses here carry door counts that make a flat phone quote meaningless. A front door, a side or kitchen door, a mudroom entry off the driveway, a basement hatch, a detached garage and a third-floor apartment entry is six openings and rather more cylinders than that, because a deadbolt keyed on both sides is one lock holding two of them. So we quote in cylinders and count them before we come. Some of the higher-value properties also carry EMTEK, Baldwin or Mul-T-Lock hardware, or the multipoint systems built into Andersen and Marvin patio and French doors, where one handle throws several bolts along the edge. Most locksmiths will not touch multipoint and quote a whole new door instead. We service, rekey and replace them.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Montclair questions

My house still has its original mortise locks. Do they have to be replaced?

Usually not, and we would rather you did not. A mortise body can normally be taken out, stripped, cleaned, re-pinned to a new key and put back, with the original escutcheon and knob untouched. That keeps a piece of the house that a replacement cannot give back. Where a body is cracked or has lost a part nobody makes any more, we will tell you plainly and explain what the alternatives cost you visually before you decide. Replacement is a last answer here, not a first one.

Does being in a historic district change what you can do to my front door?

It can, and it is worth checking before anyone touches it rather than after. Montclair has local historic districts where certain exterior alterations need a certificate of appropriateness from the Historic Preservation Commission. We will not guess at what applies to your address, and neither should any locksmith who has not read your file. What we do is flag it, then work to the bore and mortise pocket already in the door wherever we can, so nothing new gets cut into a street-facing elevation without you having asked the question first.

Our patio doors lock at several points along the edge. Do you work on those?

Yes. That is a multipoint mechanism, common on Andersen and Marvin patio and French doors and on a lot of the European-style entry sets around here. It is real mechanical work rather than a lock swap, and most locksmiths in this state will quote you a replacement door instead of opening the gearbox. We repair, rekey and replace them. Photographs of the edge of the door and the handle sent through first will narrow the job considerably, and estimates by text cost nothing.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Montclair?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Montclair. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Montclair?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Montclair?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Montclair?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Montclair is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
