What we see most in Verona
Verona is a small township, under three square miles of land, and most of it was built a long time ago. Roughly a third of the housing stock predates 1940 and about two thirds of it was standing before 1960, which means the average Verona front door is older than the person opening it. Detached houses dominate, but there is a real layer of two-family houses and apartment buildings concentrated along the Bloomfield Avenue corridor, so the work here splits between owner- occupied houses and rental cylinders that change hands on a schedule. That mix is why we do not quote Verona the way we quote the estate towns a few miles west.
The most common call out of Verona is not a lockout and not a rekey. It is a door that has stopped closing properly. The township sits on the slope between the First and Second Watchung ridges, the houses are old enough to have settled and then settled again, and once a frame moves a few millimetres the deadbolt no longer meets its hole. People replace the lock, which changes nothing, then replace it again with something dearer. It was never the lock. It is the door, the frame, the hinges or the strike, and it is a repair rather than a purchase. A bolt that only travels halfway is not securing anything, whatever it cost.
The two-family and rental side of Verona has its own recurring problem, which is that nobody knows how many keys exist. A house that has been a two-family for forty years has been through tenants, tenants' partners, cleaners, contractors and at least one lost key that was quietly not reported. Rekeying between tenancies takes about an hour and costs less than most owners assume. If you own a two-family here, the useful habit is to rekey the unit cylinders at every turnover and keep the common entry on its own separate cylinder, so you are not recutting keys for the whole building every time somebody moves out.
We will also tell you when the answer is not hardware. A Verona house on a normal block, with neighbours either side and a car going past every minute, is a different exposure from a secluded property, and paying for high-security cylinders on all six openings of a house like that is money spent in the wrong place. Get the exterior doors closing and latching properly, get long screws through the strike plates into the framing timber rather than the trim, rekey what genuinely needs rekeying, and put whatever is left toward lighting at the rear. That is the order we would do it in on our own house.

Verona questions
I replaced the lock and it still sticks. What now?
Then it was never the lock. If a new deadbolt behaves like the old one, the fault is the door, the frame, the hinges or the strike, and no amount of new hardware fixes an alignment problem. On older houses on sloping ground the frame moves and the bolt stops meeting its hole squarely. That is a repair: rehanging, adjusting or packing hinges, moving or deepening the strike, sometimes easing the door itself. It is the actual fix, and it usually costs less than the second lock you were about to buy.
I own a two-family here. How often should the locks be changed?
At every change of tenancy, without exception, and it is a smaller job than most owners expect. The practical arrangement is each unit on its own cylinder with the common entry on a separate one, so a turnover means changing one lock rather than the whole building and you are not recutting keys for the neighbours upstairs every time somebody moves. Keep a written list of who holds what. Most of the calls we get about a missing key are really calls about a list nobody kept.
Is an older Verona door worth keeping?
Usually. Doors from before the war are generally solid timber and better than what a supplier would sell you to replace them, and the failure is almost never the door itself. It is the hinges, the frame or the fit. Rehanging, packing a hinge or moving a strike a few millimetres brings most of them back. Where new hardware genuinely is needed we work to the existing bore wherever possible, so nothing extra is cut into the door. Replacing the door is the last option rather than the first.
How much does it cost to rekey a house in Verona?
Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.
Is there a minimum charge?
$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Verona. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.
Do you charge extra after hours in Verona?
After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.
Can I book online rather than calling?
Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.
Are you licensed to work in Verona?
Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.
