What we see most in Caldwell
Caldwell is just over one square mile with around nine thousand people on it, which makes it considerably denser than the towns immediately west and a completely different job from them. There are roughly three and a half thousand housing units inside that square mile and very little of it sitting empty. The blocks run from modest to substantial within a few streets of each other, houses sit close together with short driveways and near neighbours, and Bloomfield Avenue carries a genuine walkable downtown with flats above the shops. A university sits inside the borough. None of that adds up to estate work, and we do not price it that way.
The borough grew the way a lot of North Jersey did: an old road first, then a railway in 1891, then separation into its own borough the following year and steady residential building either side of the avenue. What that leaves is a downtown of older buildings still in daily commercial use. The commercial calls here are mostly independent businesses in those buildings, which means door closers fitted a long time ago and never adjusted since, exit devices that have been pushed several million times, aluminium storefront doors with worn pivots, and cylinders that have not been changed since the current tenant took the lease.
Turnover is the theme in a town built like this. Leases change hands, staff change, and mixed-use buildings have a street door everyone touches and flats above with locks of their own. A landlord with shops below and tenancies above is better served by a proper keying schedule than by a shoebox of keys: the common entry on one cylinder, each unit on its own, a master that opens the lot, and a written record of who is authorised to hold what. When somebody takes over a lease, the previous tenant's staff, their cleaners and whichever contractor was handed a key for a fortnight years ago are all still keyholders until the cylinders change.
What we will not do in Caldwell is sell the security package that belongs three miles west. A house with neighbours either side, a street light in front and people walking to the avenue is not a secluded property, and hanging high- security cylinders on every opening is money in the wrong place. Get the exterior doors closing and latching properly, get the strike plates screwed into framing rather than trim, rekey after any purchase or lease change, and light the rear of the house. On the commercial side, we check whether a closer can be serviced before quoting a new one, because most of the time it can.

Caldwell questions
We have taken over a lease. Should the locks be changed?
Yes, and before any stock goes in. The previous tenant, their staff, their cleaners and any contractor ever handed a key are all still keyholders, and none of them did anything wrong by keeping one. It is charged per cylinder plus the mobile service charge, it takes under an hour on a typical storefront, and it is close to the cheapest item on the whole fit-out list. Do the back door and the stockroom on the same visit, because those are the ones that get forgotten until they matter.
Can a door closer be serviced rather than replaced?
Often, and we check first. Closers fail in a small number of ways and most of them are adjustments: the closing and latching speed valves drifting out, the arm set to the wrong geometry after somebody rehung the door, or the unit backed off its screws so the whole thing is loose. Any of those reads as a broken closer and is not one. When a unit has genuinely gone, leaking oil or a worn spring, we say so and replace it, and we tell you which of the two it is before doing anything.
We own a mixed-use building. What should the keying look like?
One cylinder on the street door that every occupant carries, each flat and each commercial unit on its own key, and a master that opens the lot for you and whoever manages the building. Done properly, a departing tenant means changing one cylinder rather than the building. It is designed before anything is cut: we survey the openings, write the schedule, and you approve it. Keeping a written record of authorised keyholders is the unglamorous half of the job, and it is the half that saves the money.
How much does it cost to rekey a house in Caldwell?
Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.
Is there a minimum charge?
$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Caldwell. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.
Do you charge extra after hours in Caldwell?
After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.
Can I book online rather than calling?
Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.
Are you licensed to work in Caldwell?
Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.
How soon can you get to Caldwell?
Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Caldwell is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
