Belleville began as the Second River settlement, took its present name in the seventeen-nineties and became a township in its own right in 1839. It was industrial long before it was residential. Brownstone was quarried here and shipped out, and mills and works ran along the river for well over a century. The housing that filled in behind all of that is dense: roughly thirty-eight thousand people in about three and a third square miles, better than ten thousand to the square mile, a great deal of it two-family and three-family houses and small apartment buildings on tight lots. The shared door is the one that fails, because it is the one nobody personally owns. A street door on a three-family gets used forty times a day, gets propped with a brick in summer, gets pulled shut against a closer that stopped being adjusted years ago, and gets shouldered by everyone carrying something. What goes first is rarely the cylinder. It is the closer, the strike alignment, the latch that no longer meets the keeper because the frame has dropped, the hinge screws that have chewed out their holes, and the mailbox bank lock that has been open for two years. Replacing the lock alone fixes none of that, and a locksmith who only replaces the lock will be back.

After twenty years most multi-family buildings have accumulated a keying arrangement rather than been given one. Six keys on the owner's ring, one of which opens the street door and nobody remembers which, a basement padlock with no key at all, and a tenant quietly using the vestibule key on a back door it was never meant to fit. What it should be is written down: one key for the owner that opens the whole building, one key per tenant that opens the common doors and their own unit and stops there, and a schedule you can hand to the next person who manages the property. That is design work followed by rekeying, not a building full of new hardware, and it costs less than owners expect.

The small independent storefronts along the main commercial corridors are the same problem in a different frame. Aluminium narrow-stile doors, mortise cylinders in a shallow pocket, overhead or concealed closers, panic hardware that has to stay locked from outside and free from inside, and a deadlatch that stops meeting the keeper once the door has been pulled ten thousand times. A shop that cannot open loses the day, which is why these get treated as urgent rather than scheduled. We are in these streets most working days, so a single failed storefront lock is worth the call-out on its own and gets a short arrival window rather than a slot next week.
