We work in Kearny constantly

Kearny is the largest town in this group by a distance, around forty-two thousand people in roughly fifteen thousand dwellings, and the shape of that housing is the whole job. Under a third of it is single-family detached. Close to the same share again is two-family, and another one in seven is three or four units under a single roof. More than half of the town rents rather than owns. The median building went up around 1952 and better than a third of the stock was already standing in 1939. So the typical Kearny door is not a homeowner's front door. It is one of several doors inside a building that unrelated households share.

That produces the job we do here more than any other: sorting out a shared entry. A three-family typically has a street door, a vestibule behind it with a bank of mailboxes and buzzers, an inner door onto the stairs, then individual unit doors, then a basement door onto the boiler, the meters and the washers. Five or six locks, three tenancies, and no two of them answering to the same person. The tenant owns their unit door. The owner owns everything else. A good half of the calls we take here open with somebody unsure which of those they are entitled to change, and we would far rather settle that on the phone than standing in your hallway.

Turnover here is constant and it is the common doors that get neglected. Unit locks get rekeyed between tenants because somebody insists on it. Meanwhile the street door keeps the same cylinder for fifteen years while dozens of people cycle through the building holding copies of its key. If you own a Kearny multi- family and you only do one thing, do that one. What we will argue you out of is the instinct to hang a heavy grade of hardware on an inner stair door that any adult could shoulder through regardless. The money belongs on the street door, on its frame and strike, and on cylinders that cannot be casually copied at a kiosk.

Kearny Avenue is a long run of small independent premises, and their hardware fails in ways house doors never do. Aluminium storefront doors take a beating: pivots wear, the closer loses its check, the deadlatch stops engaging so the door looks shut and is not, and the exit device on the rear fire door seizes because nobody touches it until an inspection. A shop that cannot lock cannot close, and a shop that cannot open cannot trade, so almost none of this can wait until next week. We carry storefront cylinders, closers and exit device parts on the van for that reason rather than diagnosing on one visit and ordering for another.

We work Kearny constantly. Arrival windows here are short and small jobs are worth doing, so it is not a wasted call-out for one lock. Call rather than book online if it is urgent — the phone is faster.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Kearny questions

I rent in a three-family. Which locks am I allowed to change?

Your own unit door, generally, though check your lease because many require the owner to hold a key. The street door, the inner stair door, the basement door and the mailbox bank are the owner's, and changing them without permission causes a bigger problem than the one you started with. Tell us the layout when you book and we will tell you which side of that line your door sits on before we come out, rather than working it out in your vestibule at your expense.

Do you still do the yards, warehouses and fleet vehicles on the meadows side?

Yes, and the vehicle side is a speciality rather than a sideline. Work vans, box trucks and tractor units keyed where they are parked, with unit numbers on every invoice line and purchase orders accepted. Most locksmiths in this area will not go near a heavy truck. We come to the yard because a vehicle that cannot move is the expensive part of the problem, not the lock, and moving it to us defeats the purpose entirely.

Can a panic bar be repaired without shutting the shop for the day?

Usually. Most exit device faults are the latch, the dogging mechanism or a worn strike rather than the whole device, and those are bench-free repairs done in place. We work around trading hours where we can, and if the device genuinely has to be replaced we will fit the replacement in one visit rather than leaving you with a fire exit that does not release. A chained or blocked exit is not an acceptable stopgap and we will not leave you with one.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Kearny?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Kearny. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Kearny?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Kearny?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Kearny?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Kearny is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
