Ridgewood houses have a specific problem

Ridgewood's housing stock is old, and that is the whole story for a locksmith. The railway reached here in 1848, the village filled in around the station for the century that followed, and by 1970 there was effectively no farmland left to build on. What that leaves is street after street of pre-war colonials, Tudors, Dutch colonials and Victorians standing on ground that has never been cleared and started again. Plenty of them still carry their original mortise lock bodies. A mortise lock is not bored through the face of the door like a modern deadbolt. It sits in a rectangular pocket cut into the edge of the stile, with latch, bolt and knob spindle all working off one cast case. It is a different machine, and it wants a different trade.

Most locksmiths take one look at a mortise lock and quote a full hardware replacement, because swapping is easier than servicing and it is a bigger invoice. That is usually the wrong answer. The case is frequently better made than anything that would replace it, the escutcheon and the knob are part of what the house is worth, and the mechanism can be stripped, cleaned, adjusted, repaired and rekeyed to whatever key plan you want. We do that work. When replacement genuinely is the right call, because the case is cracked or the pocket has been butchered by somebody's earlier repair, we will say so and show you the part that failed. We would rather talk you out of new hardware than sell you hardware you did not need.

The other Ridgewood pattern is door count. A village colonial with a front door, a kitchen door, a mudroom entry off the driveway and a basement hatch is four exterior doors and eight cylinders before anyone has looked at the garage, the porch enclosure or the door between the garage and the house. These houses were built in an era that assumed service entrances, and nobody has ever taken them out. That is why we quote in cylinders rather than in doors. A flat three-door price given over the phone is wrong on most of the housing in this village, and it is wrong in the direction that produces an argument on the driveway once the truck is already there. We would rather count first.

The larger properties add a third layer. A good number of Ridgewood houses now carry EMTEK, Baldwin or Mul-T-Lock hardware, and renovations have put in Andersen and Marvin patio and French doors that throw several bolts along the edge of the door from one lift of the handle. Most locksmiths will not touch a multipoint. The gearing is proprietary, the cylinders are often not standard American parts, and the fault is usually in the drive strip or a dropped hinge rather than in the lock itself. We service them. If you have one of these doors and somebody has told you the whole unit needs replacing, get a second opinion before you agree to that, because the repair is frequently a fraction of the work you were quoted.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Ridgewood questions

Do you work on the older mortise locks common in Ridgewood houses?

Yes, and it is something of a speciality. A large share of the village's pre- war housing still runs mortise lock bodies that many locksmiths will simply replace on sight. We take the case out, clean and service it, repair what is worn and rekey it to whatever key plan you want for the rest of the house. The original escutcheon, knob and strike stay on the door where they belong. Where a case genuinely is beyond saving, we will tell you and show you the part that failed.

My Ridgewood house has more doors than a normal house. How does that work?

It is priced per cylinder, so it scales honestly instead of by guesswork. A large village colonial often runs ten or twelve cylinders once the mudroom, the basement hatch, the porch and the garage-to-house door are counted, and that is a very different job from a three-door ranch. The booking form works the count out before you commit rather than after we arrive. If you are not certain what you have, send photographs of each opening and we will do the counting for you first.

We have a patio door that locks at several points from one handle. Can it be repaired rather than replaced?

Usually, yes. That is a multipoint mechanism, most often on an Andersen or Marvin unit, and the common failures are the handle gearbox, a worn or bent drive strip, or a hinge that has dropped far enough that the bolts no longer meet their keepers. None of that requires a new door. Send photographs of the handle, the lock edge and any markings stamped into the strip, and we will identify the mechanism and the likely part before anyone drives out to you.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Ridgewood?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Ridgewood. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Ridgewood?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Ridgewood?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Ridgewood?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Ridgewood is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
