What we see most in Glen Rock

Glen Rock separated from Ridgewood in 1894 with about six hundred residents and then filled in very fast. Roughly a thousand people by 1910, over two thousand by 1920, more than four thousand by 1930. That compressed boom is why the borough reads the way it does on the ground. Under three square miles, two railway stations, and street after street of houses built within one generation of each other, most of it between the wars and just after. Almost all of it is single- family and owner-occupied, and there is very little apartment stock anywhere in the borough. For a locksmith that uniformity is genuinely useful. What has worn out on one house has usually worn out on the next one down the street.

The hardware follows the same pattern. The Colonial Revival, Arts and Crafts and Tudor houses of the 1920s and 1930s came with mortise cases and long escutcheons, and most have since had eighty years of owners adding to them: a tubular deadbolt bored in above the original knob, a rim lock on the basement door, a keyed handle set fitted to the back entry by whoever owned it in the 1980s. The result is a house with four exterior doors and three different keyways, none of which talk to each other. Sorting that out is the most common job we do in this borough, and it is mostly rekeying rather than buying. Where a keyway will not match, we say so rather than replacing everything to make the paperwork tidy.

Density is the other thing that matters here. Lots are small and the houses sit close together, which means the side or rear entry off a driveway is genuinely out of sight of the street and out of sight of the neighbour as well. That is the door to spend money on. Front doors get the attention and the good hardware because they are the part people see, but the door behind the house is the one that is actually exposed, and on this housing stock it is very often the oldest and weakest lock on the property. Detached garages from the same era usually have a service door on the side, and that door tends to be the last one anybody thinks about at all.

We will talk you out of putting high-security hardware on every door in a Glen Rock house. It is not a good use of the money. One properly specified deadbolt on the entry nobody can see, the rest of the house rekeyed to match it, and doors that actually close and latch without being pulled will do far more than four expensive cylinders spread evenly around the building. The other thing worth knowing on interwar stock is what the hardware is fixed into. These houses have exterior basement hatches and old wood-frame cellar doors, and a strong lock in a soft or split frame is not a lock. We check the frame, the strike and the hinges before we quote the cylinder.
