Ho-Ho-Kus is the outlier among the towns around it. Under two square miles, roughly two and a half thousand people to the square mile, a downtown, and a station served by two NJ Transit lines. Route 17 cuts the borough in two and the halves are different places to work. West of the highway the lots run about a quarter to a half acre, with the downtown and the commuter parking in the south- west corner. East of it the lots are closer to an acre. The recurring job here is mismatched hardware. A house that has been added to over eighty years usually carries three or four different keyways, and the owner is carrying four keys because nobody ever went back and fixed it. That is a cheap problem to solve and almost nobody recognises it as fixable at all. Trying your own key in every keyhole tells us most of what we need to know: if it slides in everywhere but only turns in some, those cylinders already share a keyway and can be made to match in an afternoon. On the pre-war end you also meet mortise lock bodies, set into a pocket in the door rather than bored through it, and those get serviced and rekeyed here rather than replaced.
Glazing behaves differently on old houses and it is worth understanding before anyone sells you anything. A pre-war entry often has sidelights, a fanlight, or glass panels in the door itself, sometimes within reach of the thumbturn. That is a physical fact about the entry, not a reason to tear out a door that has stood for ninety years. There are sensible answers, including glazing film and, where fire egress rules and your household allow it, a different cylinder arrangement. Newer rear additions bring the other kind of glass: French doors and sliders on Andersen or Marvin multipoint systems, which we service, rekey and replace rather than quoting a new door for. I carry four different keys for my own house. Is that fixable?
Almost always, and it is one of the more satisfying jobs we do. Rekeying is priced per cylinder with a working key, and keying everything alike is included rather than charged as an extra on top. Most houses here go from four keys to one in under two hours. The only cylinders that cannot be rekeyed into the set are ones from a different keyway family, and those get swapped for matching cylinders rather than the whole lockset. You keep the hardware you have and lose the keyring you have been carrying.
Do you work on the old mortise locks in the older houses here?
Yes, and it is something of a speciality rather than something we tolerate. A mortise lock body sits in a pocket cut into the edge of the door, and plenty of locksmiths will simply quote a replacement, because swapping is easier than servicing and it is a bigger invoice. The bodies are frequently better made than what would replace them, and the escutcheon and knob are part of what the house is worth. We service, rekey and restore them. Where a mortise door needs to carry a modern smart lock, there is a conversion route that keeps the original door.
