Saddle River houses have a specific problem

Saddle River raised its minimum lot size to two acres in 1951 and has held that line since, which is why the borough reads as farmland that was subdivided rather than as a subdivision. The result is two quite different housing populations sharing one small municipality. There is a National Register historic district of around sixty-five acres with roughly twenty-seven principal historic buildings, Dutch colonial sandstone and Federal houses, some of them eighteenth-century. And there are large newer estates built on the acreage that used to be farm. A locksmith working here has to be equipped for both ends on the same afternoon, because a single property will often have an old structure and a new one on it.

The practical issue in Saddle River is rarely the lock itself. It is that nobody has a current picture of who holds a key to what. Contractors, landscapers, house managers, pool and generator services, a previous owner's staff. Over a decade that list gets long, nobody maintains it, and a key handed out in good faith years ago is still a working key today. Rekeying every exterior opening to a fresh key, once, with a written schedule of who gets which key going forward, is the single most useful afternoon you can spend on a property like this. The two housing populations want opposite instincts. Most locksmiths will not touch a multipoint and will quote a replacement door instead. We service, rekey and replace them. The sandstone houses want restraint. Thick masonry openings, doors hung by hand that have never been square, mortise lock bodies set into a pocket in the door rather than bored through it. Those can be serviced and rekeyed, and usually should be. Swapping original trim for a modern set is a downgrade dressed up as an upgrade.

It is worth being honest about what two acres does to security, because it cuts both ways. There is no rail or bus service inside the borough, the nearest station is a few miles off, houses sit well back from the road, and there is essentially nothing to walk past. The opportunistic end of the problem has very little to work with here, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. The same setback means the back of the house is overlooked by nobody, and a long driveway is a long approach for whoever you have called. Both are true at once. Availability is the other quiet fact worth knowing: not every locksmith will drive out this far, and that is better established in advance than at midnight.
