Saddle River houses have a specific problem

Saddle River raised its minimum lot size to two acres in 1951 and has held that line since, which is why the borough reads as farmland that was subdivided rather than as a subdivision. The result is two quite different housing populations sharing one small municipality. There is a National Register historic district of around sixty-five acres with roughly twenty-seven principal historic buildings, Dutch colonial sandstone and Federal houses, some of them eighteenth-century. And there are large newer estates built on the acreage that used to be farm. A locksmith working here has to be equipped for both ends on the same afternoon, because a single property will often have an old structure and a new one on it.

The practical issue in Saddle River is rarely the lock itself. It is that nobody has a current picture of who holds a key to what. Contractors, landscapers, house managers, pool and generator services, a previous owner's staff. Over a decade that list gets long, nobody maintains it, and a key handed out in good faith years ago is still a working key today. Rekeying every exterior opening to a fresh key, once, with a written schedule of who gets which key going forward, is the single most useful afternoon you can spend on a property like this. Where there are several structures, a master key system is usually the better route, because it gives you levels of access rather than one key for everybody.

The two housing populations want opposite instincts. The newer estates run EMTEK and Baldwin trim, Mul-T-Lock cylinders, imported European hardware, and the multipoint systems built into Andersen and Marvin patio and French doors, where one handle throws several bolts down the door edge. Most locksmiths will not touch a multipoint and will quote a replacement door instead. We service, rekey and replace them. The sandstone houses want restraint. Thick masonry openings, doors hung by hand that have never been square, mortise lock bodies set into a pocket in the door rather than bored through it. Those can be serviced and rekeyed, and usually should be. Swapping original trim for a modern set is a downgrade dressed up as an upgrade.

It is worth being honest about what two acres does to security, because it cuts both ways. There is no rail or bus service inside the borough, the nearest station is a few miles off, houses sit well back from the road, and there is essentially nothing to walk past. The opportunistic end of the problem has very little to work with here, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling. The same setback means the back of the house is overlooked by nobody, and a long driveway is a long approach for whoever you have called. Both are true at once. Availability is the other quiet fact worth knowing: not every locksmith will drive out this far, and that is better established in advance than at midnight.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Saddle River questions

We have had a lot of trades through the house over the years. Where do we start?

With a full rekey and a written key schedule. Every exterior opening rekeyed to one new key, then a record of who holds what from that point on. On a property with several structures the master key design visit is usually the better route, because it gives you levels: one key that runs everything for you, single-door keys for people who only need one door. It also produces a document, and the document is the part that actually solves the problem. The rekeying is straightforward. Knowing what you have is the hard part.

Our house is genuinely old. Will you have to replace the original locks?

Usually not, and we would rather not. Older houses here typically run mortise lock bodies, where the lock sits in a pocket cut into the edge of the door instead of through a bored hole, and mortise hardware is frequently better made than whatever would replace it. It can be serviced, rekeyed and brought back to proper working order with the original escutcheon and knob left in place. Where an old door needs to carry modern hardware there is a conversion route that keeps the door. Replacement is the last option rather than the default.

Can one key open the house, the garage and the gate?

Often, and where it cannot we will tell you what would have to change rather than leaving you to discover it. Gate hardware is usually the piece that decides the answer, because gate cylinders and house cylinders are not always the same family and a gate operator sometimes wants its own arrangement. Detached structures on older properties can carry a keyway from a different decade entirely. We survey every opening first and tell you what one key will realistically cover before anything gets cut.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Saddle River?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Saddle River. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Saddle River?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Saddle River?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Saddle River?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Saddle River is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
