Upper Saddle River houses have a specific problem

Upper Saddle River was farmland with fewer than five hundred residents until the 1950s, when the zoning ordinance went in and the population grew roughly tenfold in twenty years. The housing stock still shows it. Something like a quarter of the borough's homes were built in the 1960s, with the 1950s and 1970s making up most of the rest of the pre-1980 stock, on lots of about an acre, and the borough is now fully built out with almost no developable land left. What that means at the door is that the bones of most houses here are mid-century even where nothing visible is, because nearly every one has been extended, re-doored or gutted at least once since.

That layering is the whole job in Upper Saddle River. A 1960s house with a 1990s addition and a patio door fitted last year is carrying three generations of hardware and usually three different keyways on one building. The front entry is new and good. The side door into the utility room is on a cylinder from an era nobody in the household remembers. Houses up here routinely have six to eight exterior openings and half of them are doors the family never uses and therefore never thinks about. Walk the outside, count every door that leads in, then count the keyholes on each. We recount it with you on arrival before anything starts, because the number given on the phone is nearly always low.

Renovations bring their own hardware with them. The addition that gained you a family room almost always gained you a wall of sliders or a set of French doors, and on this vintage of work that usually means an Andersen or Marvin multipoint system, where one handle throws several bolts along the door edge rather than a single deadbolt. Most locksmiths will not touch those and will quote a replacement door. We service, rekey and replace them. The related point is that a mid-century house with an addition on it settles unevenly, so a door that will not lock is frequently a door that has dropped a few millimetres against its strike. That is a hinge and alignment problem, not a lock problem, and we will say so.

The security picture here is genuinely mixed and it is worth saying so plainly rather than picking the half that sells better. Route 17 runs along the eastern side with the commercial strip on it, so there is real through traffic at the boundary. Behind that, the interior is one-acre subdivision streets and cul-de- sacs with no reason for anyone to pass through, no rail station of its own, and very little foot traffic. That combination suppresses the opportunistic end of the problem more than most homeowners expect. What it does not address is glass, because those same additions put a great deal of it across the back of the house facing nothing. Locks are the wrong tool for glazing; cameras, lighting and sightlines are the right ones.
