Upper Saddle River houses have a specific problem

Upper Saddle River was farmland with fewer than five hundred residents until the 1950s, when the zoning ordinance went in and the population grew roughly tenfold in twenty years. The housing stock still shows it. Something like a quarter of the borough's homes were built in the 1960s, with the 1950s and 1970s making up most of the rest of the pre-1980 stock, on lots of about an acre, and the borough is now fully built out with almost no developable land left. What that means at the door is that the bones of most houses here are mid-century even where nothing visible is, because nearly every one has been extended, re-doored or gutted at least once since.

That layering is the whole job in Upper Saddle River. A 1960s house with a 1990s addition and a patio door fitted last year is carrying three generations of hardware and usually three different keyways on one building. The front entry is new and good. The side door into the utility room is on a cylinder from an era nobody in the household remembers. Houses up here routinely have six to eight exterior openings and half of them are doors the family never uses and therefore never thinks about. Walk the outside, count every door that leads in, then count the keyholes on each. We recount it with you on arrival before anything starts, because the number given on the phone is nearly always low.

Renovations bring their own hardware with them. The addition that gained you a family room almost always gained you a wall of sliders or a set of French doors, and on this vintage of work that usually means an Andersen or Marvin multipoint system, where one handle throws several bolts along the door edge rather than a single deadbolt. Most locksmiths will not touch those and will quote a replacement door. We service, rekey and replace them. The related point is that a mid-century house with an addition on it settles unevenly, so a door that will not lock is frequently a door that has dropped a few millimetres against its strike. That is a hinge and alignment problem, not a lock problem, and we will say so.

The security picture here is genuinely mixed and it is worth saying so plainly rather than picking the half that sells better. Route 17 runs along the eastern side with the commercial strip on it, so there is real through traffic at the boundary. Behind that, the interior is one-acre subdivision streets and cul-de- sacs with no reason for anyone to pass through, no rail station of its own, and very little foot traffic. That combination suppresses the opportunistic end of the problem more than most homeowners expect. What it does not address is glass, because those same additions put a great deal of it across the back of the house facing nothing. Locks are the wrong tool for glazing; cameras, lighting and sightlines are the right ones.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

400+ reviews is not a handful of friends. It is nine years of doors.

Upper Saddle River questions

How do I know how many cylinders my house has?

Walk the outside and count every door that leads in, including the one from the garage into the house and any basement or utility entry, then count the keyholes on each. Most exterior doors have two, a knob and a deadbolt. Sliders and French doors may have none, one, or a multipoint handle that keys separately. The booking form asks the same question and we recount it with you on arrival before anything starts. On a house that has been extended, the real count is nearly always higher than the owner expects it to be.

Why do we carry three different keys for one house?

Because the house was built once and altered several times, and each round of work brought its own hardware with it. A 1960s original, a 1990s addition and a recent door replacement will usually be three different keyways, and nobody ever went back to reconcile them. Try your key in every keyhole first. If it slides into a lock but will not turn, that cylinder already shares a keyway and can be made to match the others. If it will not go in at all, that cylinder needs replacing rather than rekeying, which is a small job either way.

Do you charge extra to come this far north?

No. The mobile service charge is the same everywhere we go. Distance affects scheduling more than price, so a morning slot is easier to fill up here than a five o'clock one, and we will give you a realistic window rather than an optimistic one. The more useful point is that the list of locksmiths who will actually drive out this far is shorter than the list that will answer the phone, so it is worth establishing who comes before you are standing outside at night.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Upper Saddle River?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Upper Saddle River. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Upper Saddle River?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Upper Saddle River?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Upper Saddle River?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Upper Saddle River is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
