What we see most in Wyckoff

Wyckoff is the odd one out in this part of Bergen County, because it is not a commuter rail town. Passenger service on the line through the township ended in 1966, and everything since has been organised around the car and the driveway. As late as 1940 roughly a third of the township was still farmland. The housing that replaced those farms went up mostly in the 1950s and 1960s on minimum lot sizes of fifteen and twenty-five thousand square feet, and it is large: the majority of houses here have four or more bedrooms. Ranches, capes, splits and colonials, well kept, generously spaced, and by now essentially built out with very little developable land left.

Built out means the new work is renovation and replacement rather than subdivision, and that has changed what is on the doors. A 1958 ranch that has been extended and reworked twice now carries hardware out of a millwork catalogue rather than a builder's pallet: EMTEK, Baldwin and Mul-T-Lock on the entries, and Andersen or Marvin patio and French doors across the back of the house that throw several bolts along the edge from one lift of the handle. Most locksmiths will not touch a multipoint. The gearboxes are proprietary, the cylinders are frequently not standard American parts, and the fault is usually in the drive strip or a dropped hinge rather than in the lock. We are set up for that work.

The recurring Wyckoff problem is much simpler, and it is not the lock. Houses on this kind of ground settle. Frames shift a few millimetres over a couple of decades, the door drops on its hinges, and the deadbolt stops lining up with the hole it is supposed to enter. People ring and say the lock is broken. It almost never is. A deadbolt that only throws halfway is not a locked door: it looks locked, it feels locked, and it will come open under a shoulder. That is a repair to the door, the frame or the hinges, and it is worth doing before anybody spends money on hardware, because new hardware in the same wrong position behaves exactly the same way.

One more thing specific to a township built around cars. In most Wyckoff houses the door people actually use every day is the one from the attached garage into the house, and it is routinely the cheapest lock on the property, sometimes a builder-grade set on a hollow interior slab that was never intended to be an exterior opening. Meanwhile the front door carries the expensive hardware and gets opened twice a week. If you are going to upgrade one opening, upgrade that one. We will talk you out of putting high-security cylinders on every door in a house this size, because that is not where the weakness is and it is not what the money is for.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Wyckoff questions

My door has to be pulled hard before the deadbolt will turn. Is that the lock?

Almost certainly not. That is the door, the frame or the hinges having moved, and the bolt no longer meeting its hole squarely. It is a repair rather than a replacement, and it is worth doing properly, because as things stand that door is not actually locked in any meaningful sense. We adjust hinges, plane and shim where needed and reposition the strike. Fitting new hardware onto a misaligned door only puts a better lock into the same wrong position.

Our patio door locks at several points with one handle and it has stopped working. Do we need a new door?

Very rarely. That is a multipoint mechanism and it is genuinely different work, but the usual failures are the handle gearbox, a worn or bent drive strip, or a hinge that has dropped far enough that the bolts no longer meet their keepers. All of those are repairs to a door you keep. Send photographs of the handle, the lock edge and any part numbers stamped into the strip, and we will identify the mechanism before anyone drives out.

Is a keyless lock a sensible idea on the door from the garage into the house?

On that door it is usually the best money in the house, provided the door itself is up to the job. Check first that it is a solid exterior-rated door in a proper frame, because a lot of attached garages were finished with a hollow interior slab and a passage set. We confirm the door swings and latches cleanly before fitting anything electronic. A motorised bolt on a sagging door will grind its motor to death inside a year, whatever it cost.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Wyckoff?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Wyckoff. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Wyckoff?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Wyckoff?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Wyckoff?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Wyckoff is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
