Franklin Lakes houses have a specific problem

Franklin Lakes went from farmland to planned communities beginning in the 1950s and 1960s and never settled on one house type. The borough covers close to ten square miles of rolling, wooded ground with several lakes, wetlands and slopes steep enough to dictate where anything could be built, and its zoning runs from large single-family districts down through smaller ones to planned residential, townhouse and senior districts. Route 208 crosses the middle and Interstate 287 clips the western edge. The practical consequence for us is that a quote given over the phone is less reliable here than in a town with one dominant vintage, because the next house along may be a mid-century colonial, a 1990s custom build or an association townhouse.

Whatever the vintage, the pattern that keeps repeating is the garage. Newer construction here usually means a three-car garage with an interior door into the house, plus a rear or deck door, plus a side entry into the mudroom. That is a lot of exterior openings, and the garage is the one the family actually uses, because the front door is for guests. Which makes the garage the entry worth handling properly and the one almost nobody thinks about. A code at the garage door means the kids, the dog walker and whoever is delivering something do not need a key to the house, and nobody leaves a remote in an unlocked car on the driveway overnight.

The back of the house is the other half of the job. Lots here back onto woods, water or a wetland buffer, and houses get built to face that: decks, walls of sliders, French doors across the rear elevation. Two things follow. The first is hardware, because patio and French doors of this era usually run Andersen or Marvin multipoint systems, one handle throwing several bolts along the door edge, and most locksmiths will quote a new door rather than diagnose one. We service, rekey and replace them. The second is that a lock is a good answer to a door and a poor answer to a pane of glass, so the useful work on a glazed rear elevation is cameras, motion-sensing lighting and sightlines, which our smart lock and camera pages cover properly.

It is worth being straight about the risk picture, because it is a mix rather than a story. Winding streets, cul-de-sacs, no rail station of its own, mature trees and long driveways mean there is very little casual foot traffic and almost nothing to walk past, so the opportunistic end of the problem barely operates here. The same trees and the same setback mean the rear of the house is overlooked by nobody at all. Both facts are true and anyone selling you only the frightening half is selling. What follows is that most houses here do not need high-security cylinders on every door. They need the garage handled, one or two rear openings taken seriously, and the glass covered by something other than a lock.
