Millburn & Short Hills houses have a specific problem

Millburn and Short Hills are one township with two quite different origins, and it shows in the doors. Short Hills began in 1877 as a private planned community: one man bought around fifteen hundred acres, laid the roads along the natural contours to leave as many trees standing as possible, and imposed deed restrictions requiring plans to be approved before anything was built. Houses went up between the 1870s and the 1920s on irregular parcels of two acres and more, in Shingle, Queen Anne and Stick styles and later Tudor Revival and neo- Georgian, several by nationally known architects. Part of it is a National Register historic district. The Millburn side is older commercially, denser, and built closer to the street.

One township therefore holds most of the hardware eras of the trade at once. The oldest houses still carry mortise lock bodies set into a pocket cut in the door, worth servicing rather than swapping, since the escutcheon and knob are part of what the house is. The mid-century sections have ordinary bored cylinders and forty years of mismatched replacements. The renovated and rebuilt houses carry EMTEK and Baldwin trim, Mul-T-Lock cylinders, and multipoint mechanisms in Andersen and Marvin patio and French doors, which most of the trade will not touch and will answer with a quote for a new door. We service, rekey and replace those. It is closer to a speciality here than a sideline.

There is also a genuine commercial dimension that most locksmiths' town pages ignore. This part of Essex County carries a regional retail concentration and a substantial healthcare employment base within a few minutes of the houses, and we work that side as well as the residential one. Storefront hardware, closers and exit devices, back-of-house and stockroom doors, and the key control problem that arrives with staff turnover: somebody leaves, four keys are unaccounted for, and nobody wants to rekey a whole site over it. There is a steady flow of contractors and service vendors too, who need controlled access across several premises without carrying a ring of keys per person.

On the residential side, the honest position is that seclusion works in both directions. Long drives, mature planting, streets that carry no through traffic and neighbours who recognise the wrong vehicle all cut down casual opportunism, and that is a real effect rather than a consolation prize. What rises instead is exposure. A house set well back behind trees is not overlooked by anyone, and houses of this size run a great deal of glass at the rear: sunrooms, French doors, walls of window. No lock addresses glass. Cameras with a real view, lighting that responds to movement and clearing the sightlines do, and the home security material on this site sets out how we approach it.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

400+ reviews is not a handful of friends. It is nine years of doors.

Millburn & Short Hills questions

How do I count cylinders rather than doors?

Count keyholes, not doors. Most exterior doors have two: the knob or lever, and the deadbolt above it. A deadbolt with a keyhole on both sides instead of a thumb turn inside is one lock but two cylinders, and houses of this age and size very often have them on doors with glass in or beside them. That is the single most common reason a locksmith arrives with one number and leaves with another. The booking form asks about double-sided deadbolts specifically, so the quote is right before anyone drives out.

We have original hardware on an older house. Can it be rekeyed rather than replaced?

Usually yes, and it is the right instinct. Mortise hardware from this period is generally better made than what would replace it, and the visible trim is part of what the house is worth. We service and rekey rather than defaulting to a swap, and where a lock body genuinely cannot be saved we explain why before touching it and work to the existing mortise or bore so nothing new is cut. If you want keyless entry, it usually belongs on a side or rear door rather than the front one.

Staff turnover keeps costing us keys. What is the fix?

A keying schedule rather than a growing pile of spares. Individual doors keyed so a departing member of staff can be removed by changing one cylinder rather than the site, a master held by whoever should hold it, and a written record of authorised keyholders so the question can actually be answered. For contractors and service vendors moving between premises, restricted keys that cannot be copied at a hardware counter, or a keypad on the back-of-house door with a code per company, usually cost less than the rekeys they prevent.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Millburn & Short Hills?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Millburn & Short Hills. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Millburn & Short Hills?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Millburn & Short Hills?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Millburn & Short Hills?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Millburn & Short Hills is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
