How do I count cylinders rather than doors?
Count keyholes, not doors. Most exterior doors have two: the knob or lever, and the deadbolt above it. A deadbolt with a keyhole on both sides instead of a thumb turn inside is one lock but two cylinders, and houses of this age and size very often have them on doors with glass in or beside them. That is the single most common reason a locksmith arrives with one number and leaves with another. The booking form asks about double-sided deadbolts specifically, so the quote is right before anyone drives out.
We have original hardware on an older house. Can it be rekeyed rather than replaced?
Usually yes, and it is the right instinct. Mortise hardware from this period is generally better made than what would replace it, and the visible trim is part of what the house is worth. We service and rekey rather than defaulting to a swap, and where a lock body genuinely cannot be saved we explain why before touching it and work to the existing mortise or bore so nothing new is cut. If you want keyless entry, it usually belongs on a side or rear door rather than the front one.

Individual doors keyed so a departing member of staff can be removed by changing one cylinder rather than the site, a master held by whoever should hold it, and a written record of authorised keyholders so the question can actually be answered.
