What we see most in Westfield

Westfield has been settled since the last year of the sixteen hundreds and has been a rail town since the railroad came through it, which is why the street pattern looks the way it does: a compact commercial core, a station in the middle of it, and residential blocks radiating out on a grid. The downtown is one of the largest independent retail districts in the state, running to a couple of hundred storefronts, and it is genuinely independent, with a good share of those businesses in the same unit for twenty-five years or more. The town covers a little under seven square miles at a density high for this kind of housing. For our purposes that means two separate trades, and they need different things from us.

The residential stock is the older half of the work. The designated historic blocks run to large turn-of-the-century revival houses on deep lots with generous setbacks, and the town's commission has flagged over a hundred further houses as potentially historic, which tells you how much pre-war material is still standing. Houses of that age and size collect doors. A front door, a kitchen or side entry off the drive, a mudroom, a basement hatch, a garage: that is four or five exterior openings and eight or ten cylinders before anyone counts the interior ones. It is why we quote in cylinders rather than doors. A flat three- door price over the phone would be wrong on most of these houses, and we would rather count what is there than guess at it.

Much of that older stock still carries original mortise lock bodies, while the renovated end of Westfield carries the opposite problem: EMTEK, Baldwin and imported European hardware fitted during a kitchen or rear-elevation job, often with multipoint strips on patio and French doors that throw several bolts from one handle. Both get quoted the same lazy way, which is replacement. Mortise bodies are frequently better made than whatever would replace them and can be serviced and rekeyed. Multipoint mechanisms are repairable too, and most locksmiths will not touch them and quote a full door instead. Between the two, replacement is the right answer far less often than the trade's default suggests, and we will tell you which you have before anything comes off the door.

Westfield sits close in to the dense corridor and it is walkable, and that cuts both ways, which we would rather say than sell fear. Close-set houses with neighbours in sightline and a busy street grid make an approach visible in a way that a long wooded driveway does not. What a town of this shape produces instead is ordinary opportunity: unlocked side doors, keys left in obvious places, doors facing a service alley. The downtown version is the back door of a shop, on an original cylinder, no closer, out of sight of the street, and that is the one that gets tried rather than the display front.
