We work in Wallington constantly

Wallington is under one square mile and holds close to twelve thousand people, which makes it one of the most densely built municipalities in Bergen County. It is not a smaller version of the towns around it. It is a different kind of place with a different set of problems. The largest single category of housing here is not the single-family house: roughly a third of all housing units in the borough sit in two-unit buildings, against under a quarter in detached single-family houses, with a further forty per cent or so in buildings of three units and up. Just under six households in ten rent rather than own. That mix is the job here.

Density and tenure change what a locksmith is actually being asked to do. In a two-family, the front door is a shared door, the basement is a shared basement, and the building has a mailbox bank instead of a mailbox. The unit doors upstairs and down are separate tenancies with separate keys that must not open each other, while the owner needs one key that opens everything without carrying six of them on a ring. That is a key plan rather than a lock purchase, and it is the single most useful thing anybody who owns property in this borough can have written down. Most buildings we are called to do not have a plan. They have an accumulation.

The other constant is turnover. Tenants change, and every change is a rekey that has to happen between one lease ending and the next beginning, usually on a date somebody else has already set. Mailbox locks get lost, and the small cam lock in a mailbox bank is a few minutes of work that owners routinely leave for months because nobody wants to book a callout for one lock. Common entry doors take the heaviest use in the building and are the first hardware to fail, particularly the closer and the strike. If you own more than one unit here, batch the work. Give us the list and we do the whole building in one visit, which costs less per door than three separate calls.

Most of this housing is old. Around three-quarters of the borough's units were built before 1970, and about a fifth predate 1939, from the period when the town filled up around the industry along the river. That means original wood frames, doors rehung by a succession of owners, and locks fitted over decades with no plan behind any of it. It also means we will tell you when hardware is not worth upgrading. A high-security cylinder in a soft or split frame protects nothing at all, and on a shared entry it protects nothing for two households instead of one. Fix the frame, the strike and the closer first. The lock is the cheap part of that job and the least important part of it.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Wallington questions

How many keys should a three-family building have?

One key for the owner that opens the common door, the basement and every unit; one key per unit that opens the common door and that unit only; and the whole arrangement written down so it survives the next tenant change. What most three-families actually have is nine keys, three of them unlabelled, and a guess about which is which. Rebuilding that into a proper plan is usually a single afternoon, and it rarely means buying hardware. It mostly means rekeying what is already fitted.

I own a few units here and need several done at once. Can you do that in one visit?

That is the sensible way to work in this borough, and it costs less per door than separate callouts. Send the list beforehand: how many units, how many exterior and common doors, whether the mailbox bank needs doing, and whether the basement and any storage rooms are included. We plan the key system first, then cut and fit in one pass. A turnover rekey between tenancies is usually one short visit per building rather than a day's work.

Can you do mailbox locks, or is that too small a job?

We do them, and they are worth doing properly. A mailbox bank in a multi-unit building uses small cam locks, and when a tenant loses a key most owners let it sit for months because it feels too minor to call anybody about. Roll it in with the next rekey or the next unit turnover and it adds very little to the visit. If you are already booking work on the building, put the mailboxes on the same list rather than handling them separately.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Wallington?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Wallington. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Wallington?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Wallington?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Wallington?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Wallington is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
