What makes Jersey City different
Jersey City is not one market. Downtown and the waterfront are towers and converted industrial buildings. The Heights, the West Side, Bergen-Lafayette and Greenville are largely two, three and four-family houses, much of it pre-war. Journal Square sits between the two and is changing fastest. What holds across all of it is that about seven households in ten rent, the large majority of units sit inside multi-family buildings, and roughly a third of the stock has gone up since 2000. So the door in front of you here is usually a unit door inside a building rather than the front door of a house. That one fact decides most of what a locksmith can and cannot do for you.
If you rent, here is the useful part, and almost nobody says it plainly. You do not control the front door of your building. What you control is your own unit door, and what you almost always want after moving in is that cylinder rekeyed, so every key handed out before you arrived stops working. Done properly that is not a replacement. The existing hardware stays on the door, the lock body stays, the cylinder is re-pinned, and the landlord gets a working key the same day. Nothing about the door looks different afterwards. Check your lease before you book and tell your landlord or managing agent what you are doing, because many leases require them to hold a key and a rekey lets you settle that in the same visit.
Everything else in the building belongs to the building. Entry doors, buzzers and intercom panels, the mailbox bank, package rooms, laundry rooms, basement and roof access, the compactor closet. A resident cannot authorise work on any of it, and we would rather tell you that on the phone than in your lobby. If the street door is not latching or the buzzer release has stopped throwing, that is a call the super or the management company makes, not you. When they do make it, these are ordinary jobs on buildings of this age: strikes, closers, electric releases and a door that has dropped on its hinges.
The other half of our work here is for landlords and managing agents, because Jersey City buildings accumulate keys. Tenants, previous owners, supers, cleaners, contractors. The number in circulation is genuinely unknowable, and it is worst in older three and four-family houses that have changed hands twice. Two things fix that. Rekey between tenancies every time, rather than deciding case by case whether this particular tenant seems fine. And stack the work: several units on one visit is one call-out rather than one each, and a building surveyed once can be given a deliberate key plan instead of the accumulated one it has now. When staff turn over, key control is the entire point.
The newer waterfront and Journal Square towers are a different animal again. Access is a fob or a credential on a phone, run by a system the management company administers, and an individual resident cannot alter it. Lost fobs, added fobs and after-hours lockouts go through the building office rather than a locksmith. Your unit door inside that system is often still an ordinary mechanical lock, and that part we can help with. We will also talk you out of putting high-security hardware on every door. Behind a staffed lobby and a controlled entry, a hardened cylinder on a unit door buys very little. Put it where the exposure actually is, and rekey the rest.

Jersey City questions
I just moved into a rented apartment. Can I have the lock changed?
Your unit door, generally yes, and a rekey rather than a replacement is the version most landlords accept without argument. The hardware stays, the cylinder is re-pinned, old keys stop working, and you hand over a fresh key for the landlord's file. Check your lease first, since many require the landlord or agent to hold a working key, and tell them before we come rather than after. The front door of the building is not yours to change and has to go through the management company.
The building entry door and the buzzer are broken. Can I book that?
You can tell us about it, but the work has to be authorised by whoever runs the building: the association, the owner or the managing agent. Common doors, intercom panels, mailbox banks and laundry room doors are building property, and a locksmith turning up on one resident's say-so is a problem for everybody. Pass our number to your super, or send us their details and we will deal with them directly. Entry door faults are usually a strike, a closer or alignment rather than the lock itself.
I manage several units. Can you do them all in one visit?
That is most of our Jersey City work. Send the unit list and the access arrangements and we will do them in a single visit, which means one call-out across the whole job rather than one per door. If the building has never had a key plan, it is worth surveying once and keying it deliberately: a master for staff, individual keys per unit, and a written record of who holds what. Key control matters most at the moment a super or a maintenance contractor leaves.
My building uses fobs. Can you copy or replace one?
Usually not, and be careful with anyone who says otherwise. Credentials in a modern access system are issued and cancelled by management through their own software, and a duplicate the building does not recognise defeats the point of keeping a record at all. Ask the building office first. What we can do is everything on your own unit door inside that building, plus the mechanical hardware the system never covered: storage cages, bike rooms and older interior doors are very often still keyed.
How much does it cost to rekey a house in Jersey City?
Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.
Is there a minimum charge?
$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Jersey City. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.
Do you charge extra after hours in Jersey City?
After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.
Can I book online rather than calling?
Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.
Are you licensed to work in Jersey City?
Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.
