What makes Weehawken different

Weehawken is under a square mile of land carrying two entirely separate locksmith markets stacked on top of each other. Above the Palisades are the older streets, the heights and bluff and the low downtown pocket at the foot of the cliff, where most buildings went up before 1939 and the dominant type is two, three or four units under one roof. Below, on reclaimed rail yard along the river, sits thirty years of waterfront development: mid-rise and high-rise condominium and rental buildings served by ferry and light rail. The township grew by better than a third in ten years and nearly all of that growth happened down at the water rather than up on the hill.

Up top the work is the same work as the rest of this territory, only tighter. Narrow lots, buildings pressed against their neighbours, street doors opening straight onto the pavement, and stairs cut into the hill so that a building's back door sits a storey below its front. The hardware is old and layered: a mortise lock in the original door, a rim cylinder added above it decades later, a deadbolt bored through at some later point again, three keyways where one would do the job. We would rather rationalise that than rip it out. Mortise bodies in these houses are frequently better made than what would replace them, and they can be serviced and rekeyed.

Down on the water almost none of that applies. A waterfront tower is a managed building, which means the only door that is really yours is your unit door, and everything before it belongs to the association or the management company. Entry runs on fobs and readers rather than keys, the garage sits on a credential, and a lost fob is a database entry rather than a lock change. What we can do is the unit itself: rekey or replace the cylinder, sort a lock that will not throw because the door has moved in its frame, and deal with the balcony and terrace doors. Anything on a common door needs the building to authorise it, and we will say so before you book rather than after we arrive.

The waterfront is also the one part of this territory where genuinely expensive modern hardware turns up as a matter of routine. Large sliding and swing patio doors onto river-facing balconies are commonly multipoint, meaning one handle throws three or four locking points into the frame at once, and when the gearbox inside the door fails it will neither lock nor, on a bad day, open. That is a specialist repair rather than a cylinder swap, and the gear has to be identified correctly before anyone orders a part.
