What we see most in Demarest

Demarest is small, wooded and quiet. Roughly two square miles, under seventeen hundred housing units, and a mature canopy that keeps a lot of the streets genuinely dark. It grew off the Northern Railroad after 1859, first as a resort and commuter village with an ornate 1874 depot, then filled out as suburban housing once the George Washington Bridge opened in 1933. The stock skews older and larger than the borough's footprint suggests, and unlike its neighbours a great deal of it has been kept, restored and extended rather than knocked down. Which means original doors, original hardware, and a surprising amount of it still perfectly serviceable.

The detail that matters more than it sounds is the second structure. Demarest houses often have a genuinely detached garage, and a detached garage is a separate building with its own door, usually on its own key, usually never rekeyed since the house was bought. It is also where the ladder lives, and a ladder is how somebody reaches a first floor window that nobody bothered to lock. The same logic covers a shed, a pool house, a rear gate. Keying the outbuildings alike to the house is included while we are already on site, with no matching surcharge, and it is the cheapest improvement most properties here have available.

On the older houses the front door is frequently a mortise lock, meaning a lock body set into a pocket cut in the edge of the door rather than bored through the face of it. Most locksmiths take one look and quote a full hardware replacement, because swapping is quicker than servicing and it invoices better. That is usually the wrong answer. Mortise hardware is often better made than what would replace it, the escutcheon and knob are part of what the house is worth, and it can be stripped, cleaned, adjusted and rekeyed. We do that work, and we say so plainly on the occasions when replacement genuinely is the right call.

The other Demarest condition is darkness. Deep setbacks, heavy planting and unlit stretches of street mean a rear or side door can be worked on unseen for a long time, while the front is the only opening anyone passing would notice. Spend on the doors nobody can see rather than the one everybody can. And where a house here has been rebuilt or heavily extended, expect European entry hardware and multipoint patio doors, one handle throwing several bolts along the door edge. Most locksmiths quote a door replacement for those. We service, rekey and replace the mechanism itself, which is nearly always what the door actually needs.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Demarest questions

Should the detached garage be on the same key as the house?

Yes, and it almost never is. Keying it alike is included when we are already on the property, so there is no matching surcharge. It is one of the easiest improvements available and it gets forgotten because a garage is not where people think about security. Worth remembering what is usually in there: ladders, a crowbar, a cordless drill, and often an opener remote for the attached side of the property. Securing the building that holds the tools is not a detail, it is the point.

We are restoring an older Demarest house. Can we keep the original hardware?

In most cases, yes, and we would rather you did. Original mortise bodies can be taken out, cleaned, re-lubricated, adjusted for a door that has moved on its hinges, and rekeyed to match everything else on the property. Knobs, escutcheons and back plates stay where they are. If a case is cracked or the internals are past rebuilding we will tell you, and there are replacement bodies that fit the existing mortise pocket so the visible hardware still survives the job.

Do you cover Demarest after hours?

Daytime, always. After five in the evening there is a mobile service charge collected before dispatch, and whether a technician goes out depends on who is on call that night. Worth knowing in advance: on the older doors here, a genuine after-hours entry is often slower than people expect, because a mortise lock in a solid door does not respond to the quick methods that work on a modern bored cylinder. Tell us what the door looks like when you call and the estimate will be closer to reality.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Demarest?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Demarest. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Demarest?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Demarest?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Demarest?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Demarest is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
