Alpine houses have a specific problem

Roughly two thirds of Alpine's land is public or quasi-public, most of it Palisades Interstate Park, and the borough has no commercial district. What that means at the door is that a large share of houses here back onto woodland or the cliff edge rather than onto a neighbour. Add steep slopes, private septic, long private approaches and a building boom that peaked in the 1980s, and you get properties with more exterior openings than the owner has counted: main entry, service entry, a pool house, a garage block, a gate. We walk the property and agree the opening count with you before anything is touched. Any locksmith quoting one of these over the phone is guessing at the number.

The honest picture of security out here is two-sided, and most people selling it will only give you one half. Alpine has no rail station, no downtown and almost no reason for anyone to be walking past your house. Opportunistic crime needs foot traffic, a quick approach and a quick exit, and this borough supplies none of them. That is a real advantage and we are not going to pretend otherwise to sell you hardware. The other half is that the same isolation means a rear elevation nobody overlooks, a driveway nobody sees down, and a longer wait for anyone you call. More exposed and less exposed at the same time. What follows from that is specific to your property rather than general.

Houses at this size carry hardware a lot of locksmiths avoid. EMTEK and Baldwin trim, Mul-T-Lock cylinders, imported European hardware, and the multipoint locking systems built into Andersen and Marvin patio and French doors, where one handle throws several bolts along the edge of the door instead of a single deadbolt into one strike. When a multipoint stops working the common quote is a whole new door, because the system is unfamiliar and replacing is easier than diagnosing. We service, rekey and replace multipoint hardware. We will also talk you out of putting high-security hardware on every door. The doors worth upgrading are the ones nobody can see from the road, because someone working on a front door under a light is exposed and someone working on your back door is not.

The other thing that comes with land is glass. Houses facing the Palisades tend to be built around the view: walls of windows, sliders, French doors across an entire rear elevation. A lock is a good answer to a door and a poor answer to a pane of glass, so on a house like that the useful conversation is cameras, motion-sensing lighting and sightlines rather than another cylinder, and our smart lock and camera pages set out what we actually fit. One plain fact to close on: the further out you go, the fewer locksmiths will make the drive at all. Availability this far out is not a given, and it is worth knowing who comes before you need them.

Those are real, and they are quoted exactly as written — but they are still five we chose. Read them where they live — unedited, in whatever order Google puts them, including any we would rather you skipped.

Alpine questions

Can you key an entire property, house, garage, pool house and gate, to one key?

Yes, though on a property with that many openings a properly designed master key system is usually better than keying everything alike. Keyed alike gives one key that opens everything, including in the hands of whoever you last handed it to. A master key system gives you one key that opens everything and separate keys that open only what that person needs: the gardener, the pool service, the house manager. The design visit surveys every opening and produces a written keying schedule before anything is cut. Gate hardware is often the piece that decides what is possible.

Our Andersen patio door will not lock any more. Do we need a new door?

Almost never. That door runs a multipoint system, one handle driving several bolts along the door edge, and when it stops locking the cause is usually a worn gearbox, a stretched linkage, or the door sitting out of alignment against its keepers. All three are repairable. The common quote is a full door replacement because the hardware is unfamiliar and the invoice is larger. We diagnose first, and where the gearbox is genuinely finished we replace the multipoint hardware itself rather than the door it sits in.

Will a locksmith actually come out to Alpine?

We do, and it is worth establishing that before you need one. The further out from the built-up towns you go, the shorter the list of locksmiths who will make the drive, and a lockout at night is the wrong moment to find that out. Appointments here are scheduled windows rather than a vague afternoon, one named locksmith rather than whoever is free, and nothing about the property is discussed anywhere afterwards. That is how we work everywhere rather than a tier you pay extra for.

How much does it cost to rekey a house in Alpine?

Up to six cylinders — the usual three-door house — is $695 as the Rekey & Secure package, which includes the mobile service charge, keying every door alike, five keys cut and tested on site, and every deadbolt checked. Beyond six cylinders it is $55 each with a working key.

Is there a minimum charge?

$250. That is the mobile service charge and it is the floor on any residential or commercial visit in Alpine. Estimates by text, photo or video are free.

Do you charge extra after hours in Alpine?

After 5 PM the mobile service charge is $350 and it is collected before a locksmith is dispatched. Everything else is priced the same. After-hours dispatch is subject to technician availability.

Can I book online rather than calling?

Yes, for everything except car keys and active lockouts. Answer three questions about your doors, see a real price, pick a time. Leaving the deposit online takes $25 off.

Are you licensed to work in Alpine?

Yes. New Jersey Locksmith Business License Number 34LX00020300, bonded and insured through State Farm, and Google Guaranteed. The licence number appears at the bottom of every page of this site, on our invoices and on our trucks, as New Jersey requires.

How soon can you get to Alpine?

Emergencies are usually within the hour. We run technicians across the coverage area rather than sending everything out from one place, so Alpine is covered around the clock. We give a realistic arrival window on the phone rather than an optimistic one.
