Truck and tractor keys

Freightliner, Mack, Volvo, International, Kenworth and Peterbilt. Originated, cut and tested at your yard — no tow, no dealer backlog.

These are typical figures, not a fixed price list. Fleet keys work the way car keys do — the real number depends on the make, the model, the year and the key technology, and on a mixed fleet it can vary from one unit to the next parked beside it.

Every figure below comes from work we have actually done and invoiced, so they are a fair guide rather than a lowball. What moves them is the vehicle: newer transponder units carry manufacturer programming tokens, software licences and OEM blanks that we pay for per job, and those are quoted separately once we know what we are looking at.

You get a confirmed price before any work starts, not after. Send us the year, make, model and unit count and we will put a real number in writing. If it turns out to be more than the guide, you hear it while the tools are still in the truck.

Class 4–8 truckPrice

Key copies — 10 to 49 keys$30 per key
Key copies — 50 or more$20 per key
Truck or tractor lockout$250
On-site key cut day up to 4 hours $850 per half day

What the price includes:

  • Coming to your yard
  • Originating the key from the lock or the code
  • Cutting and testing every key in the vehicle before we leave
  • Tagging keys to unit numbers and recording them on the invoice

What costs extra, and how much:

  • Each additional unit keyed on the same visit — $275
  • After 5 PM and weekends — $350 response charge
  • Volume key cutting is quoted per key at the tiers above

Prices shown are in effect from August 2026 and remain in effect until updated on this page. Final price is confirmed with you before any work begins. Prices assume the ignition is intact. We do not replace ignition cylinders; if yours is damaged we will tell you and refer you on.

Mechanical trucks are the easy ones

This is counterintuitive and worth saying. A 2016 Freightliner is a faster job than a 2016 sedan, because heavy trucks have largely stayed mechanical while cars went behind secure gateways. No transponder, no immobiliser, no manufacturer subscription. Cut it, test it, done.

Which is why the pricing on this page looks low next to the van page. It is not a loss leader — the work genuinely is quicker.

Bulk cutting and the key register

The economical way to key a fleet is all at once. We come to the yard for a half day, work through the units, and cut, tag and log spares against every unit number. You get a register. We keep a copy.

After that, a lost key on any logged vehicle is a phone call and a flat price rather than an origination job. The fleet key program is here.

Truck key questions

Can a locksmith make a key for a Freightliner?

Yes. Class 4 to 8 trucks are largely mechanical, which makes them faster and cheaper than a modern car — we originate the key from the lock or the code and cut it at your yard.

Do you need the VIN?

It helps and sometimes it is essential, but a key can usually be originated from the door lock or ignition without one. Have the unit number to hand either way — we put it on the invoice.

What if the ignition is damaged?

Then it is not our job, and we will say so on the phone rather than after we arrive. We originate and program keys; we do not replace ignition cylinders. Tell us what the ignition is doing when you call, and if it needs replacing we will point you at someone who does that work properly.

Can you cut keys for our whole fleet in one day?

Yes. On-site key cut days are how large fleets get spares made economically — the more units we do in one visit, the lower the per-key rate.

How many spares should a fleet keep?

Two per vehicle, tagged to the unit number and logged in a register. That is the difference between a lost key being a phone call and a lost key being a half day of downtime.

Which makes do you work on?

Freightliner, Mack, Volvo, International, Kenworth and Peterbilt, all of which we have real job history behind. Medium-duty Japanese cabs — Isuzu, Hino, Mitsubishi Fuso — we have not worked on and do not claim. If you run something else, call and we will tell you honestly whether we can do it.
