Storefront door locks: why aluminum doors stop latching
The glass-and-aluminum door at the front of most shops and offices takes a beating no house door ever sees. When it misbehaves, the cause is usually one of a handful of things.

Why they are different
Storefront doors have a very narrow frame, or stile, so there is no room for an ordinary lock. They use a narrow-backset deadlatch or deadbolt, often Adams Rite-style, set inside the stile, with a separate cylinder screwed into it. Many have a hook-shaped bolt that grips the frame. They are opened hundreds of times a day, and they are heavy.
The common problems
- The door does not latch on its own. Usually the closer is not bringing the door fully shut, or it is slamming it so hard the latch bounces back. Closer adjustment fixes most of these.
- The key turns but the lock does not. The cam on the back of the cylinder is worn, wrong or loose, so it no longer moves the lock. Common after someone swaps a cylinder with the wrong cam.
- The door has dropped. Pivots and hinges wear and the door sags, so the bolt hits the frame. That is an adjustment or a pivot replacement.
- The handle or paddle is loose. Constant use loosens everything. Left alone, it eventually breaks the lock behind it.
The fix is usually an adjustment
Most storefront calls end with an adjustment and a part or two, not a new door. Our commercial evaluation is $350: the door and hardware diagnosed and quoted, and often fixed on the same visit. After 5 PM the commercial mobile service charge is $500, collected before dispatch.
Do not wait for it to fail shut
A storefront door that will not lock at closing time means someone stays with the building all night. A door that will not open in the morning means a closed business. Both cost more than fixing it when it first starts to stick.
Questions people ask
Can a storefront door take access control?
Yes. Electric strikes and electrified locks are made for aluminum storefront frames. The door has to close properly first, or the system will fail.
Can the storefront cylinder match our other keys?
Usually. The cylinder can be keyed into your existing system or a new master key system.
Do you replace the glass?
No. We handle the locks, closers, pivots and hardware. Glass is a glazier’s job.
