Multipoint door problems: why you lift the handle, and what fails
Many newer patio doors, French doors and front doors lock at three or more points along the edge, not one. They are excellent doors. They just do not forgive being treated like an ordinary lock.

How a multipoint lock works
A long locking strip runs inside the edge of the door with hooks, rollers or bolts at several heights. Lifting the handle drives all of them into the frame at once, through a gearbox in the middle of the door. Then you turn the key or thumb-turn to lock them there. Lift, then lock. Pull down on the handle to unlock.
The three common problems
- The handle is hard to lift. The door has dropped or the frame has moved, so the hooks hit the keeps instead of sliding in. The fix is usually adjustment, not parts.
- The key will not turn. Almost always because the handle has not been lifted fully. The gearbox will not let the cylinder lock until the points are engaged.
- The handle is floppy or does nothing. Something in the gearbox or the strip has broken. That is a part, and it needs to be identified properly because these vary a lot.
The expensive mistake
When a multipoint door gets stiff, people force the key, or hang their weight on the handle. That is exactly how gearboxes break. If lifting the handle takes more than light pressure, stop and have it adjusted. Adjustment costs far less than a gearbox.
What we charge
Our multipoint service is $450: the service call, the diagnosis and the adjustment. If a gearbox, a locking strip or a whole multipoint unit is needed, it is quoted on site before any work starts.
Questions people ask
Can a multipoint door take a smart lock?
Yes, but it needs a smart lock made for multipoint hardware, not a standard deadbolt. Ask before you buy.
Can the cylinder on a multipoint door be rekeyed or matched to my house key?
Usually the cylinder can be replaced with one keyed to match. It depends on the cylinder type, which we check on site.
Why did my door get harder to lock in summer?
Doors and frames expand and move with heat and humidity. A multipoint lock has several points that must line up, so it feels small movements more than a single deadbolt does.
